Reflections on Rhode Island and Israel Co-chaired Academic Symposium "The Patient, The Practiti


In March of this year, Brown University held a healthcare symposium which was co-chaired by Elizabeth Toll, MD Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine, Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University, Dr. Shmuel Reis, Director of The Center for Medical Education at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The event was titled "The Patient, The Practitioner, and The Computer"and physician attendees from the United States, Israel, United Kingdom, Denmark, and Australia presented international perspectives on the use of computers in medical practice. The event, held by the world renowned ivy league institution based in Providence, RI was a perfect example of fostering collaboration and strengthening ties between Rhode Island and Israel's healthcare, academic and research communities.

The complexity of the health care industry in the United States is unparalleled and presents significant challenges as the US works to optimize its use of the electronic health record. Dr. Josh Gutman, a member of the RIIC, and Rhode Island primary care physician who has practiced in Rhode Island for many years, attended the conference and offers his reflections based on what he heard from his peers and his experience as a locum tenen both internationally and domestically.
